A Simple 3-Stage Method for Better Mixdowns

 

Overview

This guide will help you approach breakbeats as both musical performances and source material. Keep the focus question in mind as you learn where breaks come from and how to capture them cleanly.

Mixing can become complicated very quickly. With endless plugins, processing techniques, and conflicting advice, it’s easy to lose sight of what actually makes a mix work.

My approach is much simpler. I generally think about the mixdown in three stages: Volume, EQ, and Compression/Saturation.

The important part is the order. Each stage should solve as much of the mix as possible before moving on to the next.

Stage 1: Volume

Before reaching for an EQ or compressor, get the levels right.

A surprising amount of mixing can be accomplished simply by balancing the volume of each element. If the drums feel weak, the bass is overpowering the track, or a synth is distracting from the main idea, the first question should be:

Is this simply too loud or too quiet?

Start with the most important elements of the track and build the balance around them. In electronic music, that will often be the drums and bass, followed by the main musical or vocal elements.

At this stage, avoid worrying about making everything sound huge. The goal is to create a clear hierarchy where every sound has an appropriate place in the mix.

A good volume balance gives you the foundation for everything that follows.

Stage 2: EQ

Once the levels are working, move on to frequency balance.

EQ allows you to deal with sounds that are competing for the same space. Instead of simply turning an element down, you can make room for another sound by controlling the frequencies where they overlap.

For example, if your kick and bass are fighting each other, identify which frequencies are most important to each sound. If a synth is masking the vocal or lead, you may only need to reduce a small area of its frequency spectrum rather than lowering the entire channel.

The goal isn't to EQ every sound.

If something already fits into the mix, leave it alone.

Use EQ to solve specific problems: remove unnecessary frequencies, reduce masking, and help the important characteristics of each sound remain clear.

Stage 3: Compression & Saturation

The final stage is about controlling dynamics and shaping density.

Compression can help stabilize sounds whose levels fluctuate too much, add punch, or make different elements feel more consistent within the mix.

Saturation works differently, but it can achieve a related result. By introducing harmonics and subtly reducing transient peaks, saturation can make sounds feel denser, louder, and more present without simply increasing their volume.

This is particularly useful with drums, basses, and other elements that need to feel upfront.

Again, processing should have a purpose. Don't add compression or saturation because you think every channel needs it. Listen for a problem first, then decide whether the processing improves it.

The Order Matters

The reason I approach mixing in these three stages is simple:

Volume → EQ → Compression/Saturation

If something can be fixed with volume, there is no reason to immediately reach for EQ.

If EQ solves the problem, you may not need compression.

By working from the simplest solution toward more complex processing, you avoid unnecessary plugins and make better mixing decisions.

A strong mix rarely comes from doing more. It comes from identifying what the track actually needs and making deliberate adjustments.

Start with the balance. Create space with EQ. Then use compression and saturation where they genuinely improve the sound.

That process alone can take you surprisingly far.
